Network TroubleshootingOur internet connection is handled by Tier1Net. If you find a problem with the internet connection that you can't fix (see below), they can be contacted via their web site. Here are some things you can check/do if the network appears to be not functioning. There are basically two networks: a local area network (LAN) that runs under Microsoft's NETBUEI and a wide area network (WAN), which operates under TCP/IP (i.e., the internet). Communication between computers in-house occurs via the LAN, which is orchestrated by the hub (see photo below). Communication that requires access outside the LAN is passed off from the hub to the router (or gateway, see photo below). First deterimine if the problem occurs on the LAN or the WAN. If you can access other computers on the PIELTER network via network neighborhood, but cannot get to outside internet sites, then the problem lies with the WAN or router. If you can access internet sites, but not in-house computers, then there is a problem with the LAN. Yes, both can also be down. Here are some suggestions. Problem with the WAN: If you can access http://128.128.173.70, but not http://ecosystems.mbl.edu, then there is a problem with the Tier1Net's domain name server (DNS). You need to call Tier1Net to resolve the problem. If neither URL works (nor others), you can try to reboot the router by cycling its power on and off (i.e., unplug it, then plug it in). Wait several minuets before deciding this didn't work, as it takes some time for the various network components to restart. If rebooting the router doesn't help, call Tier1Net. Problem with the LAN: Each computer that is pluged into the hub, and is turned on, should should light a corresponding light on the hub. If the light is not on, either the network cable is unplugged, or there is a problem with the network card in the computer. Make sure the network cable is plugged in. You can also try to reboot the computer(s) that don't appear under network neighborhood. Note, it takes several minuets before a computer will show up on the network. If the network connection is still down you can contact the LTER Network personnel.
